Am I not sending you?
On an average day, the line to the embassy is more than a mile long.
Post – Covid, the numbers appear reduced but not really. The enormous volume of visa applicants is now hidden under a digital booking system.
If you were to go to the website of this embassy -which shall remain unnamed – the booking slots are about 8 months long.
To the average Ghanaian, this is not shocking considering the number of our compatriots who want to leave our shores for greener pastures in said country.
Inside the embassy it gets worse.
Respectable professionals cower at the sight of twenty-year old’s interviewers. In fear of an application refusal, articulate persons remain subdued while enduring unproductive and downright rude behavior from barely educated front line staff.
These people are non-Ghanaians.
Toe to toe they have no rights over our land or people; except they are sent by their government.
While the embassy is in our country, it isn’t considered Ghanaian soil.
Embassy staff have diplomatic immunity thus not subject to the normal laws of this country. Translation: their behavior- however outrageous is backed by a powerful foreign government.
Now switch the roles.
Let’s say you were appointed by the government as an ambassador to that country.
First of all, you would not be subjected to the visa queue.
Second; you would bypass any encounters from all persons who assumes everyone granted a visa intends to overstay their welcome.
You would go in all the powers of this nation, knowing that your destination although in a foreign land, was Ghanaian territory.
When you finally arrive at your embassy in their land, you would remain aware that you are only subject to Ghanaian law.
Will you be bold? Of course
Will you back down when confronted with aggression? Of course not.
The bad news is, unless you’re in politics, it’s unlikely you have a future career as a diplomat.
The good news is, you’re vested by stronger backing than any government of any country no matter where you are.
The sad news is, most of us lose sight of that.
Since God remains unseen, we consider him less powerful than the president of the largest economies we know.
When we do acknowledge His power, we use the barometer of our circumstances to determine whether or not He has any interest in our well-being.
It’s easy to embrace timidity because we feel like we walk alone and our success or failure depends solely on our actions.
That was Gideon.
Afraid in his own land.
Trying to be as inconspicuous as possible.
His actual words were, If the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us.1
Maybe that’s why God asked the rhetorical question, am I not sending you?
We may be confused on who God is but He is not.
We have limits to what we consider authority, God’s authority is limitless.
He wants us to live boldly because He backs us.
Gideon went from afraid, to I need a confirmation and then another confirmation and finally took back his land from the Midianites with a bare-bones army using unconventional methods.2
What made the difference?
Gideon was backed by God and this time Gideon believed it.
Somedays you will feel alone, inadequate, incapable and rudderless.
Don’t believe those feelings.
God meant it when He said He will always be with you.
Don’t be afraid of the horde whatever appearance they take.
Regardless of where you live, you remain subject to heaven’s law.
You have your Father’s backing. It’s time to believe it.
