Still True

Name: Balaam

Occupation: Professional Sorcerer1

Name: Yahweh

Occupation: All-mighty, All- powerful I AM who looks out for His children

Who do you think would win a fight between these two?

Me too.

Balaam came with pedigree.

Kings don’t seek you out unless you’re good at what you do and Balaam was good at what he did.2

Think black magic, telling the future and the other stuff paranormal movies are made of and you have this man pegged.

Among his peers he was formidable.

What he hadn’t anticipated was going up against the one who ruled it all. The Lord who watched hawkishly over Israel.

Israel remained oblivious of the plotting against them as they went through conquest after conquest.1

Balak, Moab’s King, was strategically planning Israel’s destruction and had called in Balaam as consultant.

Balaam heard God clearly and initially refused,3 but a little greasing of hands and a lot of second-guessing later, he went with the emissary to the heights of Moab.

Knowing he could do nothing without God’s permission, Balaam did the only thing he was allowed- he blessed Israel in the presence of his royal audience.

Confusion aside, the King’s solution was to sweeten the pot.

If he offered more money, perhaps Balaam would relent and do what he had been summoned to. He had no idea there was no negotiating with God’s instructions.

Balaam was answerable to one that he just couldn’t usurp. Balak was willing to pay regardless of how much it took.

Time and time again Balak had them change locations,4 hoping that this time his agenda would hold and time and time again Balaam went through the motions and issued a blessing to his benefactor’s sworn foes.

Amidst all the gyrations, Balaam told a truth which should be inscribed on every believer’s heart.

God is not a man that He should lie.5

Nor the son of man that He should change his mind.

We all know people lie.

Good people, Bad people, well-meaning people, or people who by virtue of circumstance are unable to keep their word.

The friend we loaned money to who stopped picking our calls.

The spouse we pledged our life to who stopped valuing us.

The boss who promised the promotion and is now changing jobs.

Life teaches you that people lie and as humans, it’s easy transcribe that trait to God; especially when something in scripture doesn’t align with the reality of our lives.

As humans we can have the nature of God through access by the cross.

The one-time God took on human flesh, He did not take on human nature.6

Translation?

God isn’t your boss who doesn’t keep his word.

God isn’t your Dad who walked out on your mum.

God isn’t your friend whose loyalty had an expiry date.

A lot of people remain skeptical of God’s concern for them but even in a law-based covenant, God didn’t allow evil to overtake his people.7

We who are of a better covenant8, should expect a lot better.

Evil is real and often intimidating, especially when we think we are in a fight all by ourselves.

Israel had the backing of God and so do you.

That’s the confidence the words of Balaam should inspire.

Regardless of whatever schemes are planned against you; the blood of the lamb remains your covering.

No one can change what God has ordained for you, and God will not change his mind about you.

The fact that things are not perfect doesn’t negate that.

With all of these happening, Israel was still trudging the desert.9 God’s people were not in God’s promised land yet.

Your world may not be perfect.

That doesn’t mean evil has unfettered access to your life.

You are God’s job.

A job He takes very seriously.
