This was never the plan

After the purge of Baal, Israel was supposed to turn over a new leaf.1

Everyone had seen the fire.2

Everyone knew God was God.

So why had the change lasted just a day?

The more I read this story the more I identify with this prophet who turned from champion to depressed in less than a week.3

After the display at carmel, revival was supposed to break out.1Jezebel would now believe in God and He alone would be worshiped.

Turns out Carmel was Elijah poking the bear and God hadn’t sent any more fire to consume the evil queen of Israel.

The rain had come to wash away the pain of drought,4, but when the skies cleared, a fatwa was issued against Elijah with no one to back him up.5

That’s enough to make you wonder.

The year is a few days old and you started with a clean slate but so far some smudges are showing.

Where is the God who filled you with so much enthusiasm?

How come you’re already getting bad news?

Why is what you thought was a dream appearing to be a nightmare?

God may change form but He’s not going to change Himself.

At Carmel He sent fire.2

At Carmel God was thunderous.

Now Elijah was on a new mountain and yes there was fire but this fire was without God.6

Hmm.

The Omnipotent chose to use a still small voice.6

The confusing thing about a still small voices is, you question who and what you’re hearing.

Fires leaves little doubt that God is speaking—After all, it is in God’s nature to do the spectacular.

God chose to give Elijah reassurance in an inconspicuous way.

God does that a lot.

When we’re down because nothing is working the way we want, and we’re questioning everything we believe in, God often comes in a way that’s easy to miss.

The Almighty didn’t send an extra dose of fire to the palace to consume Ahab and his wicked wife. He sent Elijah a meal, a nap and reassurance that he wasn’t alone.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been overwhelmed.

If you haven’t, don’t worry.

It’s coming sooner than you think.

God may not do things our way, but He whispers the path as we navigate a tumultuous planet.

Take a nap.7

Eat some food.

Know you’re not alone.

Above it all—listen for His voice and remember that God may speak in a way you’re not used to.

With a song.

Through a child.

Through this piece.

Through an offhand comment by that person at work you rarely listen to.

Just know this—God is with you even when you have a misstep, and it is He who can turn every disappointment into glory.

Happy New Year.
