Close Up

I bought one of those magnifying mirrors.

Not exactly sure why, but I guess the prevailing theory was the more detail I could see, the easier it would be to engineer my skin to what I want it to be.

Nice in theory.

There was one thing that I didn’t count on though.

There is a lot I really don’t need to see magnified, and I understand the need for thick make up on high definition tv.

A lot of things that look great from a distance don’t look anywhere as good on close up.

That includes people.

This is why it’s never a good idea to wish you were someone else.

In today’s world of instagram and airbrushing, everyone shows off their best selves.

Perfect skin, perfect makeup, perfect appearance…and even  the perfect life.

There was a time the Joneses lived across the street. Now they live in our houses at the touch of a button. It is no wonder the increase in technological connectivity has bred a rise in pathological anxiety.

A lot of people you would  think of exchanging lives with, you would never want to exchange problems with.

As a species, we’re adept at covering up the unattractive and showing off the best parts. The problem with that is seeking perfection in another human is a recipe for disaster. Granted, we all have our strengths, but these also come with weaknesses.  The guy that has  great acumen with money may be the same one that treats his wife horribly.

The charismatic female with a knack for making friends, may be struggling with self control and discernment.

The counsellor who has advise for everyone, may be struggling in a critical relationship, and the philosopher who appears to know all things, may be without a steady spiritual anchor.

By all means admire the ones in your world who seem ahead of you, but remember that yours is a unique story.

God didn’t make you to be another version of your human idol.

The only perfect one is Him.

The only one deserving of worship is the one worthy of worship.

If you could get close enough to the ones who have it all together, you’d realise they really don’t.

Don’t nitpick all your flaws.

Trust the God who handcrafted you with intention1 and give the mirror a break.
