He stopped
For a man on a mission, Jesus sure stopped a lot.
That wasn’t to say he was obliged to.
That is to say every time he stopped; he made a conscious decision to.
Paparazzi have shown us crowds thronging celebrities.
People are attracted to those they look up to.
Jesus was in a class of his own when it came to fame.
His encounters were known to be life changing.
You didn’t go to see him for an autograph…you went to see him for the impossible.
A word from him and diseases of all kinds left.
A prayer from him and thousands were fed.
It made sense that amidst the crowds that thronged him, it would be hard to stop him.
Except God doesn’t follow human norms.
Not only did Jesus stop, it’s a very interesting roster – the kinds of people he stopped for.
You would expect him to stop for government officials, and he did. 1
You would expect him to stop for the rich and famous and yes there was one.2
What no one expected, was for him to stop for those who offered nothing.
The blind.3
The widow.4
The Lepers.5
The lame.6
Some of these people called out.
Some of these people didn’t have the faith to call out.
All of these people had been humbled by one circumstance or another.
The good news?
Everything changed when he stopped.
Life-long conditions were healed.
Destinies were rerouted and the impossible happened.
It’s tempting to think he will stop for us when he’s impressed by us.
Perfect makeup.
Perfect hair.
Impeccable clothing.
The latest car.
The grand career.
We live in a world where power attracts power and the more powerful you are, the more attractive you are.
Did I mention God doesn’t follow human norms?
He gives grace to the humble isn’t just a space filler in scripture.7
We don’t need a perfect voice to call.
God hears our imperfect cry.
Even when that cry is lost in the crowd.
Even when the cry is only in our heart.
Life won’t get to have the final say.
Don’t despair because you don’t have it all together.
Don’t reason it out because you’ve lost your voice.
God stops among the many for the one.
You are that one.
