Heard

It was a request that not made.
A request the all-knowing God heard.
Abraham at ninety-nine had a seasoned relationship with the Almighty.
That’s the only way you recognize God in the flesh.
The trio approaching Abraham’s tent could have been any group of people but Abraham didn’t question his instincts. He just knew.1
It is the first recorded account of a man hosting God for lunch.2
By this time, Abraham had long settled into his life.
He’d made peace with the fact that there would be no child with Sarah.
Abraham had his son, and that son was by Hagar.3
At least there was going to be someone to inherit the vast wealth God had blessed him with.
God on the other hand had personally come to deliver the news.
Abraham’s faith from a long time ago had not been in vain. He hadn’t misheard God or all of the promises God had given.4
It was now that the time was due.
The son by Sarah would be conceived in the next three months.5
As far as messages go, this was hard to believe, and based on the biblical account, Abraham and Sarah were both on the –I’ll believe it when I see it- train.5,6
Those of us who know the scriptures know happily ever after was coming… but I digress.
Good news aside, God was debating the future of Sodom. He was going to see if the evil there was as bad as reported, and He took Abraham into his confidence.7
In response to the unbelievable privilege of God trusting him with this information, Abraham had but one request.
Lot hadn’t been the best of family but his uncle loved him and wanted his life saved.
What seemed like bartering was a veiled disguise for clemency.8
Abraham started with fifty.
Maybe there were other righteous people in the city. It would at least be a bonus if more than one family was saved from impending doom.
The number dropped to 45, then 40 and God gave his word that for the sake of 30 he wouldn’t destroy Sodom.
Abraham had to be sure, so he drove down that number to ten which to him seemed like a fairly safe bet.9
I agree. What are the chances that a bustling metropolis would not have 10 people who were righteous?
Somehow it didn’t.
Abraham was wrong but his real prayer was answered.
God knew Abraham’s heart for Lot, and in response sent a heavenly swat team to get him out.10
I’ve been in countless sermons where I’m told the more specific you are, the more likely it is that God answers your prayers.
I’ve also been in a few where preachers declare that unanswered prayers is because those prayers weren’t as detailed as God wants.
This passage happily debunks those barriers to faith.
God knows exactly what you want.
He knows exactly what you’ve given up on.
He knows exactly how hard some things are to articulate.
…and He knows how to get it done.
Isaac wasn’t a request Abraham was ready to ask in the twilight of his life.
For whatever reason, Abraham chose not to directly ask for Lot’s salvation.
God heard both requests anyway.
Now switch generations.
Abraham isn’t here but you are.
God hasn’t changed.
He still invites you to commune with Him and He stills knows every prayer you’re unable to pray.
Your life isn’t too complicated for Him to unravel.
Your circumstances are not too convoluted for Him to take charge of.
You’re the one He loves, and He knows your heart.
Whatever it is and however hard it sounds, trust Him.
He will fulfill.
