Happy Easter!

No one remembered.

I’ve always wondered why the disciples didn’t remember that Jesus said He would die and rise up in 3 days.1

Nothing in scripture said they did.

No one planned a watch night for the tomb.

The women who did go there did so out of perfunctory duty.2

No one anticipated He would rise.

When I say no one, I mean the disciples.

There was a group that remembered. A group that planned accordingly.

An unexpected group.

The Pharisees had not been in His inner circle but Jesus had said it enough times that not only did they remember; they had a plan for it.

On Saturday they went to Pilate and asked for a tomb guard.3

It’s highly unusual that anyone asks for a tomb to be guarded.

Knowing Pilate, if it had been a long-standing contract he would have said no, but he probably figured that three days was reasonable enough to deploy a battalion.

We all know how things turned out.

The soldiers were no match for a single angel and ended up passing out from fear.4

My question still remains.

Why didn’t the disciples anticipate Jesus coming back?

I have a theory.

Stress affects our memory.

Our senses often dictate the stress that we feel and after seeing Jesus arrested, feeling the fear that His torture induced, hearing the mob against Him and smelling the stench of blood and sweat, the disciples had more than enough to dislodge everything they believed about Jesus being Lord.

I know because I do the same.

When my senses label a situation hopeless, it’s hard to believe God has a different opinion.

In the face of storms, I forget the God who -on more than one occasion- says He will never leave.5,6

I forget that I have 24/7 access to the courts of the King.

I forget that regardless of anything going on around me; the one who sees it all has a plan and not just any plan.

A good plan.7

You probably do the same thing.

You know who doesn’t forget?

The enemy.

We may forget what God has said about us but he doesn’t and a lot of his job is to keep us distracted or anxious enough so we don’t tap into our source.

Maybe that’s why God wants us to trust His words as against feelings which are largely senses driven.8

Maybe that’s why He asks that we not forsake the assembly of the bredren.9

Life comes with enough stress and until our hearts are anchored in His grace; our feelings will trump our faith every time

God doesn’t lie but He does repeat himself.5,6

Even if the Pharisees didn’t believe that Jesus would actually resurrect, my surprise remains because not one disciple brought it up – even if the others were going to dismiss the idea.

These were the men that had seen Jesus raise others from the dead, yet no one thought; maybe let’s just wait the three days before we call it.

In the grand scheme of things, three days isn’t that big a deal and even if there was a 1% chance of it happening, someone could have mentioned that.

No one did.

I don’t know what you’re forgetting.

I don’t know what promise you’ve discounted because it appears so far- fetched.

I would remind you that the God who owns it all also owns natural law, and what we consider impossible is all in a day’s work for Him.

Sometimes hope for certain situations die but He is the resurrection and the life; and if He came back from the dead, there isn’t much He can’t bring back to life.

Don’t let the enemy remember more than you do.

The core of our faith is in the fact that He is risen.

Risen Indeed!
