‘Tis the season of Fathers.
The less celebrated Parents’ Day.
Whatever you think of your Father; if you’re being honest, you have to admit that one of the best gifts God ever gave any of his children is that of having a father.
Few gifts are as great as a good father and if you had one, you know this to be true.
I do acknowledge that a lot of people have had unpleasant experiences with the concept of fatherhood.
For some, this day is one that dredges up pain and frustration.
I get that.
In spite of that, looking past our reality of father – who may not have lived up to what we expected – there is one Father who goes beyond expectations.
One who more than earns the title of Father.
One who provides comfort, safety, redemption, security and hope.
One we can anchor our souls to who will never disappoint or let us down.
Even if you have a great father, you do not have a perfect father.
Your father in all likelihood made his share of mistakes because guess what? Like all parents, he wasn’t perfect – same as all of humanity.
As we celebrate our earthly fathers, take a moment to look at your real Father.
The one who conceived you before your mother ever knew you were on your way.
The one who has been with you from your years of toddling to however old you are now. There are no perfect mothers or children but there is a perfect Father… and he is yours.
The prodigal son embodies this picture.1
For all his selfishness and greed, he knew where to go to once the hunger pangs hit.2
He knew the place where food would not be in scarce supply.
What he didn’t know was his father was scanning the horizons for him, and all he had to do was take the first step.3
We would be wise to take a cue from him.
Few things tug hearts as strongly as a kid running towards an adult who loves them to be swept up in their arms.
That’s the heart of God for you.
The moment you take that first step, he starts to step towards you regardless of what you’re coming with, because he’s able to carry you.
The ultimate Father is able to bear the weight of your worry, frustration, regret or guilt and he’s able to make all of it better.
He gave up his beloved for you.
That’s the mark of a great father: One who would rather sacrifice to make a way for you, than bask in unending glory while you perish.
There is a reason you can celebrate on this day.
You have a perfect Father and his arms remain open
Run to them.
