I knew you were a hard man.1
The man given the single talent wasn’t wrong.
His belief system was off centre but his actions were dead on.
What would you do if you thought you were going to be penalised, nothing you did was going to be appreciated and your boss was only out for himself?
Of course, you wouldn’t take risks.
Of course, you’d struggle to do any more than the minimum.
The fact that this servant took his talent and buried it is what you would expect from someone who believed what he did.
The master didn’t berate the guy who got two for not getting five more talents.2
He also didn’t berate the guy who got five for not getting 15 more talents.
He applauded them for their work, their risk, and their efforts, alll of which were born out of what they believed.
The guy with the single talent probably thought He was disadvantaged by getting just one talent. He probably believed he had been singled out for minimal responsibilities and he probably listened to voices that told him he wasn’t as good as the other two.
There are few explanations for the masterclass he gives in victimhood.
First is the excuse. It wasn’t his fault. It was his master’s fault.
He did nothing because he didn’t want to get into trouble.
He buried his talent and waited for his master to come back.
You know what made the master mad?
At the very least he could have put the talent in a savings account. If he truly believed he had been set up, he could have put the talent in a bank and still come up ahead.
Interesting story, but why should we care?
What you believe about God will influence your behaviour.
Your life has a fair number of gifts, all of which come from Him.
You may not have five talents, or maybe you do.
Others may have more than you do, but you have something.
Maybe you won’t win any beauty pageants, but you have more than your fair share of charisma.
Maybe charisma is not your thing, but numbers are.
Maybe you struggle with numbers but you have an abundance of…
Whoever and wherever you are, God has given you something.
That gift is to showcase His glory and how you show off what you have, is a reflection of what you think about the one who gave it to you.
Fear isn’t cute.
And to drive out fear you need love.
The rock-solid kind. Not the love you have for God because let’s face it; that’s often shaky in difficult circumstances. You need a drive-the-stake-in kind of love.
The kind God has for you. Love so strong that Calvary was its proof.
Somehow in the religious world we often don’t hear enough about that.
There are denominations that thrive on making you feel like you should strive to do enough for the Lord and just when you think you’ve hit it; the line moves another ten paces.
When you do believe that you’re loved in a deep uncompromising kind of way, it’s far easier to give, risk and show that unique talent that was put in you before the creation of the world.
Readjust what’s between your ears.
Have faith in that which is true.
God is not out to get you.
He’s the loudest voice in your cheer in section
Go make him proud
