On Time

Let’s try something different.

Step with me into an alternate story.

Let’s say the butler hadn’t forgotten Joseph.1

You know; the guy who along with the baker had his dreams interpreted by Joseph and ended up back in his position.

Joseph had helped with the hope that the favour would be returned once Mr Butler got back into the good graces of Pharaoh.2

What if he had remembered Joseph earlier?

Let’s say Pharaoh decided to free Joseph; what would he have done?

Lived life as an ex-con, ex-rapist foreigner in Egypt?

Who would have employed him?

How would he have made ends meet.

What if Potiphar’s wife decided to inflict more pain because his rejection still stung and she was still in a position of power.

Who would have stood up for Joseph?

Would he have gone back to Israel?

How was he going to pay for the fare. If he had made it to Isreal, was he now going to start over, and what was the guarantee his brothers wouldn’t have tried to kill him again; knowing they could be disinherited if the truth came out?

Thankfully none of these things happened.

Why? Because the butler forgot.

I’m guessing Joseph believed God forgot.

God didn’t.

The Almighty was playing the long game and the timing had to be perfect.

Why should you care?

If you’ve lived long enough, you’ll probably experience some moments when you feel forgotten. When you’ve been through a few disappointments, it’s pretty easy to think God’s up to a lot and your folder is at the bottom of last year’s slush pile.

It’s not.

There’s always a reason God doesn’t work on your timeline.

For John the Baptist to be the fore runner of Jesus , Elizabeth and Zachariah had to stay childless for most of their lives.

For Isaac to marry Rebecca; she had to show up at the exact time at the well just as the servant approached the city.

For you to come to Christ, a series of events had to match up in exact sequence at a specific time; and for God to bring out of you the result He wants, there has to be an exact time that He fulfils His promises to you.

Step out of His timing and you open yourself up to a lot of unnecessary grief. Step out of his timing and the cascading effect of His provision may not work out the way it is meant to.

He’s got the entire blue print of your life mapped out and you’re foremost on his mind.3

You’re not an afterthought.

You’re not yesterday’s news.

Joseph was built for a lot of big things and the Lord who does grandeur better than any script director, made sure Joseph lived up to his actual potential at the perfect time.

Don’t despair.

When man forgets, it may mean God is planning something.

He won’t forget you.

When Joseph came out, everything lined up. 5

God will  do no less for you.
