Who you know

It’s an advantage some don’t understand and a fair bit are resentful of.

With a billion of us on this planet; it’s always going to be something that gives you leverage. Whether you’re in a pile of applicants or in a place flooded with passengers, who you know, can get you a really long way.

I encountered this while working with a large group recently.

I was in a position to influence something they were counting on, and the process was definitely a meritocracy.

The problem? I was astounded at how easily my heart softened when I was holding the work of someone I had some sort of relationship with, regardless of how distant.

My heart knew the difference between the familiar and the new and I realised how real bias can be.

Jesus knows this.

In a foretelling of the future. He predicts a situation where people say they did a lot of things in his name1 and are surprised that he doesn’t roll out the carpet for them when it comes to eternity. His response? I never knew you.

Sounds harsh…unless you stop to think about it.

There are a lot of people with notoriety.

We watch them on our screens, big and small.

We listen to them tell their stories and we fangirl over them if we were ever to see them. However much we feel as if we know them, they would consider us strangers. They may feel familiar to us, but unless we have a relationship with them, they are not and we certainly cannot compare ourselves to the version their friends are aware of.

Relationships with digital figures -regardless of how long we’ve worshiped or admired them – aren’t real relationships.

Same thing with Jesus. Practically everyone on the planet knows of Him. That doesn’t mean everyone is known by Him. He loves us and through his sacrifice, He’s given everyone the opportunity to be in relationship with Him but that’s entirely our choice.

Hearing about him, regardless of source, doesn’t mean we know Him.

Talking about Him, even if we have an audience of millions doesn’t mean we know Him. Real relationships are not built in the spotlight; they are built in the quiet and stillness of one on one meetings and that’s what our Lord wants for us and with us. Even though He died to give us access, we get to choose whether or not we want to take Him up on that.

In all likelihood you’re not going to turn your back on someone you know when you have the opportunity to influence a decision for their good.

Neither will the Lord.

Once he knows you, you’re in. His doors are open.

Getting to know Him is now your choice.

Don’t wait till it’s too late.

Go introduce yourself.
