It just so happens.
I imagine a God wink whenever I see that phrase in scripture.
As a writer, you try to keep your coincidences subtle.
When you’re God , you’re not subject to those rules and that often translates into ‘we saw you do that!”
When drafting a cute meet, the best human writers try not to make it too obvious that the hero and heroine have been set up for the one meeting that’s going to underpin the entire story.
God is not very subtle when He is doing the arrangements. It’s like when you’re playing hide and seek with your toddler. They try their best to hide, but can’t quell the inevitable giggle that gives them away.
God likes us to know what He’s doing so He leaves a few clues.
For instance, the angel assigned to Rebecca the day she met Abraham’s servant must have had her hands full. First of all how come Rebecca showed up at the exact time when the man was at the well and she wasn’t surrounded by an overwhelming number of females.1
There was for sure a spiritual plan making sure she didn’t get there too early or too late.…but I digress.
Esther is the one book where God isn’t mentioned but it’s a book that resonates with God’s giggles.
At face value, a powerful king holds a beauty pageant to replace the wife who hurt his ego.2
Except the list of coincidences is a tad over the top.
Something that always gets me to chuckle is the one morning when Haman struts in, proudly believing he’s getting ready to eliminate his nemesis.
There is only one problem.
the King has suddenly remembered Mordecai deserves a reward for saving his life, and in one of the most comical twists of scripture, Haman ends up parading Modecai through the streets of Susa in a procession of honour hours before he gets himself executed3
Think through the events that needed to line up for this to happen.
Mordecai somehow overheard conspirators trying to kill the king.
Now either these conspirators were just awful at conspiring, or God had arranged for them to spill the beans just when Mordecai was in the vicinity.
It was a single deed that could have been rewarded by a simple thank you, or by a court or even by Esther and the matter considered closed.
There was no reason for that act to be recorded. Mordecai saved his King as any good subject should…big deal.
This same King was unable to sleep on the one night before Haman strode in with his request.
When you’re ruler of such a large kingdom and you have a sudden attack of insomnia, the logical thing would be to call for entertainment from the harem, or even if reading is your forte, why would you ask for extremely boring text?4
Somehow though, everything lined up perfectly and when Haman finally entered the Kings chambers, he discovered God was three steps ahead.
If you’ve lived long enough; you’ve had some coincidental moments.
Even if you’ve not recognised them, God has directed your steps to protect you from things you were no match for, or to give you things you never could have imagined.
He’s the puppet master (in a good way) behind the curtains, and He wrote the book on not-so-subtle strategic planning.
We who see thinly through a veil can only trust that His hand is at work whether or not we see it. What the world calls coincidence is usually the Lord of hosts mouthing “I’ve got this”
You don’t have to figure everything out.
You don’t have to go crazy with anxiety because you don’t have a next move.
The Lord who’s able to make all things work out for your good, has your back in ways you can never see coming.
Trust that, hold your head up and listen for His giggles.
