More than Enough

There are limits to expectations.
Especially the expectations we have of others.
Not the people who owe you, not the people who are your subordinates or depend on you, even though to a large extent that’s also true.
There is only so much you can ask of someone with zero obligations to help you.
It’s an early life lesson.
Ask too much and you’re ungrateful.
Expect too much and you’re entitled.
Somethings you will get, but be prepared to hustle for the rest.
That’s a good boundary when dealing with man.
Somehow though, a lot of us use the same terms when dealing with God.
We asked for A and B which is already a lot, so we don’t ask for C.
As per our logic, we already have a lot, so we rationalise that asking for more translates into selfishness. After all, God has another 7 billion plus to deal with so why do we think our needs should come first?
With ongoing battles in the Middle East, why would God have time for our aches and pains?
Maybe you haven’t said those words out loud but you’ve thought them.
I have.
Considering current global events, I’m not sure I warrant divine attention for my punctured tire or my worried heart.
That is an entirely human perspective.
Good thing God doesn’t see the way I see.
I know because his perspective with David reveals it.
As King of Isreal he had it all.1 Money, respect and power to name a few.
The former shepherd who penned the Lord is my shepherd 2truly did not want.
The one who looked to God for provision looked on Bathsheba and suddenly wanted another mans wife.3
In his position, he could take whatever he wanted and without consulting God he did …and God had something to say about it.
Nathan’s visit was primarily a rebuke, but he revealed something else which gives remarkable insight into God’s heart for his own.4
If all this had not been enough, I would have given you more.4
Really?
If David had asked for more?
Keep in mind that David gave Solomon the money to build the 30 billion dollar temple.5 He wasn’t hurting for resources of any sort. This was a King who had more than his share of wives not to mention concubines. Why would he ever want more?
I’m astonished that God was willing to supply more than David needed, in order that he not sin.
David sinned in secret because he didn’t take his needs to God.
Would God had given him Bathsheba if he had?
I doubt it, but maybe God would have renewed his attraction for one of his current wives.
Maybe God would have given him something that would have taken his mind of the naked woman bathing on the roof.
I’m not surprised David didn’t ask.
God had clearly stated his position on covetousness in the law.6 What didn’t occur to David was the fact that God could sate his desires via another route.
You’re probably not asking God for something that is clearly against his word or maybe you are.
Maybe you know what you want is against his law but your needs are real and you’re ashamed to take them to Him.
A lot of sin comes from our personal ploy to satisfy needs we don’t believe God will.
Thing is, there is often a bigger need that girths our surface wants.
Regardless of the request behind the request, God encourages us to ask.
In Jesus’ own words, Until now you have asked nothing in my name.7
That doesn’t sound like a God who’s hard up.
Those aren’t the words of someone on a budget.
We live in a limited world with limited people so we’ve adapted.
We’ve learnt to curb our appetite especially when what we want is in the realm of impossible.
Eden with all it’s goodies was made by our Father, and He is the original definition of limitless.8
Will He do everything exactly as you want?
Probably not.
You know why?
God knows the real need behind every want.
He will do better.
He’s better at satisfying you than you are at satisfying yourself.
He knows exactly what lies at the heart of everything you call a need and perhaps He’s just waiting on you to ask.
So ask.
