Don’t Stop

It wasn’t a minute’s search.1

I should know. I’ve lost things that I’ve ended up searching for, for days.

My longest lost item was a piece of jewelry I found 5 years after the fact.

By then I had long given up and then I just so happened to stumble on the precious piece when I wasn’t looking.

When Jesus told the story of the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost son, He mentioned the woman throwing a party with her friends after finding her coin.2

You don’t make a commotion about something you lost for an hour.

I’m willing to bet it was at least some days of searching that yielded her precious currency.

When Jesus said seek and you shall find3, He forgot to specify for how long…or so I would like to think.

If I was to put my own interpretation on it, I’d say, seek for a couple of weeks – and if you don’t find – assume that finding is not in God’s plan for you.

Good thing I didn’t write the scriptures.

Finding is fun but finding is not easy.

In her case it involved extra lights, extra sweeping and turning over stuff that had probably not seen the light of day in a while.

In these parables, none of these people gave up. Not the shepherd, not the woman and not the father.

They all sought and they all found.

The prodigal’s father could not influence his son, but he still watched for him thus was able to spot him from a long way off.

Sometimes God makes that which you search for barely visible just so He can push your faith.

I won’t be surprised if when this woman found the coin, a tiny gleam was first to catch her eye before she spotted the sparking gem that lit up her heart.

If you’ve lived a little, you know God seldom answers quickly.

There are a few times that He does – a few times that you have but to think about a dilemma, and the answer appears in quick logical succession.

Most of the time though, there are those of us that feel the constant urge to book an ENT doctor for the Almighty.

The heavens can be silent for years, but the one thing God never rebukes His children on, is excessive asking – regardless of how many times we’ve asked before.

We on the other hand have a tendency to stop seeking.

You can only take so much disappointment without resorting to the tried and true “God said no.”

That’s usually our faith taking a dive as we justify our lack of belief in a God whose silence doesn’t imply abandonment.

It may be that you’re a couple of hours, days, or weeks from finding.

God loves faith that doesn’t give up.

He spotlights those who persevere4, regardless of how long.

What have you given up on?

Get your broom, get your flash light and plan the party.
